この時の一連の動きについては、Unwiredveiwというブログに詳しい話が残っている。たとえば、両社の交渉がまだ報じられていなかった8月2日の時点ですでに「Androidの特許関連問題を解決するために、GoogleはMotorolaを買収すべき」といったことを書いた記事が出ていたりする。
7月13日付けの記事には、RockstarによるNortel特許獲得を踏まえて、「数年後には、Android端末メーカーはApple、Microsoft、Nokia、RIM、HP、Oracleなどに対して各社に1台あたり10ドルずつ――あわせて60ドルのライセンス料を払わないといけなくなるかもしれない」といった指摘も見つかる。
“安くはない授業料”をどう回収していくのか
GoogleによるMotorolaの買収・売却を巡って結局本当に得をしたのはCarl IchanをはじめとするMotorola株主らで、またGoogleにしてもAndroid陣営崩壊の危機回避やApple、Microsoftなどへの対抗力強化を考えると、全体としては十分元の取れる取引だった、と言えるかもしれない(それとは別に、Android陣営の内紛が起こってOEMメーカーが一斉に“Windows Phoneとの二股”に走っていたら、Steve BallmerがMicrosoftのCEOを辞めることもなかったかもしれない)。
ただ、思い切って早めに“損切り”を決めたGoogleが、この約2年半の間にある程度の“授業料”は支払わされた可能性は高い――反対に、Bloomberg TVで言われているような「プラスの収支になる」という可能性はあまり高くないと思う。
その前提で留意しておきたいのは、Googleがこれでハードウェア分野の事業を諦めたわけではないということ(軸足を「携帯端末事業からスマートフォンやウェアラブルに移すだけ」とLarry Pageは言っているらしい)。同社経営陣がMotorola関連で収めた“安くはない授業料”をNest買収などを通じて、これからどう回収していくか、果たして回収できるのか、というのは今後のひとつの見所だと思う。
Carl IchanがAppleの直近の決算発表と前後して同社株式(AAPL)をさらに買い増した、というニュースも出ていた。Icahnの新たなポジションが約40億ドル超、それに対してAppleの時価総額が約4465億ドル(1月31日終値)ということで、現時点では近い将来に大きな動きがあるとも思われないが、やはり動きの気になる人物であろう。
