Windows XPのサーバ版であるWindows Server 2003は、「Windows Server 2003 Web Edition」「Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition」「Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition」「Windows Server 2003 Datacenter Edition」が発売され、「Windows Server 2000」のそれぞれのエディションを引き継いだ。
新たに追加された重要な機能には、Active Directoryの強化や、サーバロールの管理を行う「Manage Your Server」ツール、IISウェブサーバのバージョン6.0、「Group Policy」（グループポリシー）の処理と管理機能の改善、バックアップおよび復元システム、ディスク管理の向上、スクリプティングツールとコマンドラインツールの強化が含まれる。
